History of Valentines Day Cards

Over the years, the demand for Valentines Day cards is increasing, particularly among the young lovers. Without Valentines Day cards, the celebration of love and romance is incomplete.

A large number of lovers who are in love spend a huge amount on Valentines Day cards, flowers, chocolates and other gift items. The Practice of Giving Valentines Cards

As per the story behind the celebration of this special occasion, it was Saint Valentine who started it all. At the time when he was arrested by a Roman Emperor during the 3rd century A.D he used to send notes to the daughter of the jailor, and he used to sign them off as “Your Valentine.” As per a different belief children used to send notes to St. Valentine when he was jailed and even after he was executed, children continued to do so!

The concept of love and the elements of romance were included to this celebration sometime during the 1300s. However it was only in the 1700s that the lovers started to celebrate Valentines Day the way we do it today, with exchange of gifts and Valentines Day cards. England was the initial hub of celebration of this occasion however the love bug and the Valentines Day cards spread across the globe at a very fast rate thus increasing the value of red roses, cupids and red hearts every year when the occasion is celebrated by lovers. In fact it was till the late 1800s that Valentine day cards were manufactured only in England and the surrounding regions, only then the actual spread of these cards began across the globe.

American Valentines Day Cards

The tradition of exchanging Valentines Day cards soon spread throughout America as well. Large scale production and commercialization of Valentines card began in USA during the middle of the 19th century that proved to be a radical step in the increasing popularity of these cards. These cards were shipped across the country and finally across the world as well.

These Valentines Day cards decorated with material and with heartwarming and heart winning messages won tremendous success within a very short span of time. People just lined up in shops to purchase these cards. These Valentines Day cards were not only creative, but were also well-designed.

The Earliest Valentines Cards

One of the earliest recorded Valentines cards was given by the Duke of Orleans, Charles, to his spouse. The card contained romantic verses that expressed the feelings that the Duke had for his wife. The card is said to be recorded in the early 15th century and is stored in the British Museum as a valuable symbol of love.

These days Valentines day cards have become quite common but they still translate feelings in the most effective way.
