In the 1840s, the term “Merry Christmas” was coined as used by world renowned Charles Dickens in his authored, The Christmas Carol. In fact there is a history behind the origin of the term “Christmas” and later on its transformation to “Xmas” as well. The origin of the word Christmas lies in two words: “cristes” which refers to Christ and “maesse” which means mass, there Christ’s mass became “Christmas”. In Greece, Christ is known as “Xristos” therefore Christmas became Xmas as the X represented Christ. Therefore Christmas card also got referred to as Xmas card and so on.

With the multi colour processing machines and the higher degree of printing quality, the Xmas card became more of a designer and stylish card that was sent to friends and family to express warmth and heartfelt wishes. With the increasing popularity of the Xmas card a lot of well known writers and poets penned down verses to be compiled in the cards and also a lot of well known publishing houses started with the printing of these cards at the end of the year when people looked ahead to a holiday season and would purchase these awesome designer cards to convey their expressions of happiness.

A lot of people round the globe celebrate Christmas in their very own way but the Xmas card is one of the most common forms of Christmas celebration and is practiced around the world. In fact a lot of non-Christians in countries where Christianity is just a minority have also made it a habit to send a Xmas card as a festive greeting to their friends and family. Even a lot of businesses, especially the multinational ones send a Xmas card to their employees, business associates and clients to celebrate the occasion. A business Xmas card should not attempt to sell a product and instead, should just contain the name of the business.
